The Northwest coast of North America forms a distinct ecological and cultural area extending from Northern California to Alaska. Its epicenter is British Columbia and southeast Alaska. The mild maritime climate and abundant natural resources of the Northwest allowed time for  the development of both three dimensional carved wooden pieces and two dimensional painted figures. This art was heavily incorporated into the tribal ceremonies.
