While executed in 1971, this unique collection of Cape Dorset lithographs reflects a tradition of image making that stretches back 2,000 years. Since Thule times, Eskimos depicted images on sealskin or ivory. Born of a shamanistic belief system, the images conjure up a world where Arctic animals predominate and people transform themselves. The fanciful nature of this work reflects the Eskimo's adaptation and struggle with an unforgiving climate. Inuit art flourishes in a time of rapid change to the "old ways" and these unique prints capture a rapidly disappearing way of life.
